About 100 sex-trade workers and 30 johns have been arrested since Winnipeg police and several community groups began a campaign this spring to convince people that the illegal sex trade hurts everybody.
The police morals unit, along with the Salvation Army, SAGE House and the provincial government, launched the Reality Check campaign in May. The campaign included a new brochure that details how the sex trade hurts people and neighbourhoods, spelling out things like discarded needles and condoms on the streets, the spread of STDs and sexual exploitation of children.
"There is a certain element of our community that somehow thinks this is acceptable behaviour, and certainly it's not. We want to get that message out there."
About three weeks ago, the campaign was stepped up to include transit bus ads showing a john having his car towed and worrying about how his sexual misadventures will affect his family life.
