Authorities have closed a 40-year-old investigation into the death of a 19-year-old woman in central Ohio after a DNA match suggested her killer is dead.

DNA evidence found on Linda Marie Kohlmeier's clothing matched that of a convicted sex offender from Michigan, Knox County Sheriff David Barber said. The man's identity was not released because he died in 1997 and will not be charged.

The case languished without leads for decades. But after the case's evidence was found in 1998, Barber sent it to be re-examined by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification, which found a DNA sample.
